Connecticut to offer online high school courses

The state of Connecticut has begun offering online high school courses. They hope to meet two needs:

1. To provide additional ways for students who have fallen behind to get caught up; and

2. To provide a greater variety of courses than could be offered at some high schools.

You can read an article about it here.

An interesting quote from the article:

“We want to use online courses to increase access to high-quality content so that every student in Connecticut will have access to the courses they need when they need them,” said Gov. M. Jodi Rell.

Yes, there is an e-book!

Since I have not mentioned it in a while, I thought I would do so here. In addition to the print version of Complete Guide to Online High Schools, there is also an e-book version available for the very cheap price of $8.95. You can find that electronic product over at Payloadz.com.

University of Miami Online High School acts professional

People who know me and know what I look for in schools, all know that professionalism is key. If you want people to treat you seriously, you need to behave seriously.

Some time back I requested information from the University of Miami Online High School. This was prior to it being listed on this website. When they sent me information on their program, it included a nice folder with information on the program, a small notepad and two pens (all with their name and logo), and a DVD about the program.

This is what professionals do. Does it mean that yours must look like this? No, absolutely not. However, that is what the competition is doing. If you cannot do that, what can you do to make your program look professional?

Parents encourage daughter to drop out?

Unless Florida has some truly odd educational laws, the daughter in this case probably doesn’t really have to drop out to be able to attend an online high school. However, the accompanying article is worth a read on what options some parents choose for their children.

My daughter, high school dropout!

The school in question is Penn Foster High School.

Different types of online high schools

One of my favorite sites on the Internet is About.com. They seem to have columnists on most any topic and the quality of the writing is universally good. I should mention that I sometimes write for their Adult Education site*. Kimeiko Hotta Dover, the Adult Ed guide has done a tremendous job of creating a useful site.

Another amazing site at About.com is the Distance Learning one hosted by Jamie Littlefield. If you go now, you can see the 4 Types of Online High Schools.

Primavera Online High School celebrates largest graduating class

Primavera Online High School celebrates its largest graduating class in a ceremony to take place on December 19, 2007.

Primavera is accredited by both the North Central Association (NCA) and by the Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation (CITA). This rarity in the world of online high schools attests to the quality of its programs.

Laurel Springs tells “Why Homeschool is Cool.”

Go ahead. Ask me.

Ask me which online high schools will be around in ten years and which ones will have bit the dust. I can go on at length on the topic.

One school that I guarantee will still be around is Laurel Springs School. Why, you may ask? Because they have learned to adapt to a changing world and many online high schools have not.

Take, for example, their new very cool video contest on Youtube. Called “Why Homeschool is Cool,” it gives students the opportunity to create innovative and fun videos on a topic that interests them. How cool is that?

I encourage you to go take a look at it. Well worth your time.

Also, there are already some videos up over on Youtube. You can see the Laurel Springs Video Contest videos here.

Oh, and did I mention that there is some cash involved?
