Will it help me get into the military?
The answer is a firm maybe. Online high schools are classified, it seems, as Tier 2 for military acceptance. This means that they are less desirable, but may be acceptable depending on certain factors such as slots available. Tier 2 also includes the GED. I would check with your military organization of choice. It is a moving target and, depending on the service, there can be some flexibility.
This is a solid case of making sure it will work for you before you begin. Talk with the online high schools, but also talk with your recruiter at the same time. With the online high schools, you are looking for schools that have a history of having their diplomas accepted. It may well be that, when you find one of these schools, that you contact its local recruiter (instead of your own). It could well be that particular recruiter makes it work out.
- Yes, this will absolutely change. Unclear when that will happen; and
- This applies much more to schools that are solely online.
What do you think? Should the military discriminate against online high schools? Leave a comment and let me know.
