Why is it important to choose an accredited high schools?
There are a couple of reasons for selecting an accredited online high school. Accreditation ensures you of a minimum level of education. It does not mean that you are guaranteed to get a high-quality education. It will, however, give you an acceptable minimum level.
The other and equally important reason is the acceptability of the diploma itself. A university will accept almost all regionally-accredited high school diplomas, many nationally-accredited ones, and an indeterminate number from unaccredited schools. It is that indetermination that is the problem. The perception is that most unaccredited schools are unaccredited because they do not meet that minimum level. Whether that is true or not is not particularly important. The reality is the perception of those schools.
In a marked change from 2007, it has become clear that recognition by state departments of education and public school districts also have much value. One note, though, is to ensure that the state recognition comes from the department of education and nowhere else. Some states do provide recognition, but it is more of a consumer awareness process and does not attest to the educational quality and often comes from a different department.
